Aspiring stories

Paul's story

Some time ago the psychotropic medication Aldezine, also known as Melleril, was withdrawn from the market. The medical and psychological side effects clients experienced following the cessation of this drug were enormous and posed a difficult challenge not only for the client but for their carers and families.

Paul became a client of ours when his service provider requested our assistance after he ceased Melleril. Previously, Paul was sociable, enjoyed getting out and about and loved his music and food. Paul’s challenging behaviour had increased to the point where he posed a risk to himself and his carers, he was no longer able to access the community safely and his ability to function on a daily basis was significantly impaired. The staff felt helpless in being able to manage these behaviour changes and were about ready to quit.

A new approach

We started at the very beginning and provided some much needed debriefing and support to the staff so they felt encouraged to continue caring for Paul.

A reinforcement program was developed to try and decrease a particular behaviour which ended up being hugely successful.

Staff were trained in managing challenging behaviour and also in the developed behaviour intervention and support plans. It was obvious that the staff really wanted to see Paul improve and were helpful in so many ways.

Data collected allowed us to see a cyclic pattern in Paul’s behaviour and when certain behaviours were more likely to occur, so the staff were not so confused and unprepared in how to manage this behavioural rollercoaster.

We also collaborated closely with Paul’s psychiatrist to assist in managing a new medication regime.

Paul today

With many people working together, Paul is doing so much better and is back on track to leading the life he wants to. It is amazing what can be achieved when dedicated people work together with the number one goal of being making someone’s life the best it can be.
